Are You Making These Common Weight Loss Mistakes?

Have you been trying to lose weight in vain? Or have you lost weight only to gain it back just a few weeks later? You are not alone. You’re probably making one or more of the common mistakes while trying to get fit. Dr. Manjari Chandra, Consultant: Functional Nutrition, Daivam wellness, lists those mistakes and suggests ways to get it right.

It has been found it several studies that around 80-95% people find themselves gaining weight right after they lose it.

This is because people often tend to forget that there is a big difference between weight loss and staying healthy. They commit some common mistakes that stop them to achieve their weight goal. Most importantly do not lose hope while you are on a weight loss journey.

Unrealistic diets

Know for a fact that all those 7-day, 14-day quick diet plans will not help you with weight loss. They merely reduce the water weight and even if you lose a couple of kgs at the end of the week, it will immediately come back the moment you stop the diet. It is extremely stressful for your health when you force the body to go through such crash course diets for a longer period of time.

Instead, opt for a healthy diet that will control the calories and carbs without asking you to starve yourself.  Healthy weight loss diets include lots of fruits, vegetables, proteins, fiber, low sodium, low fat, low sugar intake, fewer spices, etc. and they provide a long lasting result.

Improper exercise routine

Diet and exercise go hand in hand. If you only focus on controlling your calories but do not exercise at all, you will only experience loss of muscle mass and lower metabolism. Your scale might say you have lost 3 kgs but it will not show in your body because you haven’t toned your stomach, thighs, arms, etc. with exercise.

On the other hand, too much exercise can lead to muscle and joint ailments, heart problems, breathing-related ailments, and severe stress. It is important to strike that perfect balance between exercise and diet so that one can lose weight in a healthy way.

Ignoring everything else

Many factors can affect our weight, including age, genetics, lifestyle, current health, work environment, past illnesses, and even sleep schedule.

Every person’s body is different and demands a personalized weight loss plan. Just because something worked for your friend does not mean it will work for you as well.

There is the usual weight loss goal, and then there are some special cases such as trying to lose postpartum weight, post-surgery weight or trying to lose weight in order to control a long-term ailment. It is important to consult a nutritionist, dietician and even a doctor to generate a customized weight loss schedule.

Stopping the flow immediately after losing weight

Now, this is a most unfortunate situation. After months and even years of hard work you have finally lost all the extra weight but within six months you find yourself gaining weight rapidly. This happens because many people fail to remember that weight loss is not permanent, and stop all the diets, exercises and the proper lifestyle once they reach their goal weight.

Our body is still reeling from the stress of weight loss and needs a stable and healthy lifestyle to maintain the weight. This is the time to not give in to your food cravings. Continue your healthy diet but you may allow yourself a cheat day once a week. Keep up the exercises, but now you can reduce the amount. Yoga, meditation and light daily exercises will help you maintain the weight. Try to avoid a sedentary lifestyle.
