My hair is wavy, and straightening it has always been a struggle. It usually takes me more than 45 minutes, and it never really gets straight. I’d mostly given up and switched to curling my hair for styling, and I only straightened it now and then.
So when SharkNinja sent me the Shark SilkiPro™ Straight Wet to Dry Straightener, I wasn’t expecting much. I’m now very impressed.
What is the Shark SilkiPro Straight?
It’s a straightener with a blow dryer built in, so you can go from wet hair to straight in one tool. Normally I blow-dry first and then straighten, which means two tools and a lot of waiting. With this one I started with wet hair and did both in one go.
It has ceramic plates that check the heat 1,000 times a second and adjust it in both wet and dry modes, and three interchangeable combs: a wide tooth comb, a precision comb and a gentle comb. There are also three airflow settings and three temperature settings.
How long did it take?
About 20 to 25 minutes, and up to 30 at most, from wet hair to finished. My usual routine takes more than 45 minutes and still doesn’t give me a proper result, so this is roughly half the time with a much better outcome.
The built-in comb
This was the feature I liked most, and it’s something I’d wished someone would make. As you use the straightener, the comb works through your hair with it, so you don’t have to stop and comb separately. I used the precision comb and the gentle comb, and each does a slightly different job: precision gives a sleeker finish, and gentle leaves more body and movement.
Does it work on wavy hair?
For me, yes. My hair is wavy and hard to straighten, and this got it as straight as it’s been since a salon blowout years ago before a wedding. Shark says the tool is designed to work on straight, wavy, curly and coily textures, so your results will depend on your hair, but wavy hair was a good test.
I straightened my hair yesterday, and as I write this, a day later, it’s still straight.
What about humidity?
Weather and humidity do make a difference with any straightener. In my experience they matter less when you use the right setting and a good styling product, so choose your heat and airflow settings for your hair type and don’t go too hot just because you can.
The price
It costs a lot more than I’d normally spend on a straightener, and cheaper ones are available. For me, it replaced a tool that didn’t work, a separate blow-dry, and a routine that took far too long, so I think it’s a worthwhile investment. If you only straighten occasionally, a cheaper tool may be enough. Prices change, so check the current price at the link below.
Who is it for?
- People whose hair resists straightening, like my wavy hair.
- Anyone tired of drying first and straightening second.
- Anyone who straightens often enough for the time savings to add up.
Who might want to skip it?
- If you straighten rarely, a cheaper straightener will do.
- If price is your main deciding factor.
