6 Things You Must Not Miss at Niagara Falls

We have been in Canada for over eight months now. But it was standing in front of Niagara Falls, in complete awe of it, that we had our “we have arrived” moment! Here are the things we loved about this wonderful destination.

I have a hobby of collecting postcards. As a child, I’d ask all my friends and relatives to get me a postcard or two from whichever place they were visiting. In my collection, I have two different postcards from Niagara Falls. In one, the relative who got me this postcard wrote about the fascinating experience she had viewing the falls.

While I found it quite intriguing, I always thought I’d be intimidated by this natural wonder. Not to say that I’m scared of water. On the contrary, I love it; I am a Piscean! But I always thought the sheer size of the falls and the volume of water might be unnerving. If you’ve witnessed the falls, you’d know how wrong I was in thinking so!

We visited Niagara Falls to celebrate our daughter’s second birthday last month. This was almost eight months after arriving in Canada. We avoided going there during winters since we did not want to take a chance with our toddler (we spent most of the time indoors since this was our first encounter with the extreme cold!).

I won’t forget the moment I caught the first glimpse of Niagara Falls. It felt like walking into that postcard I always saw with amazement as a child. It brought back memories of me wondering if I’d ever get to travel the world. To be honest, it was standing in front of Niagara Falls that we grasped the feeling of our Canadian dream coming true for the first time since arriving in this beautiful country. (It was on the Hornblower cruise to be precise when we were being showered by the water from the falls!)

Here’s a list of things we loved about the place. While there are plenty of things we plan to explore in our future trips, here are some of the things to do at Niagara Falls:

1. Admire the Falls

If you ask me what’s the topmost thing to do at Niagara, I’d say take good enough time to sit by and admire the falls. Soak in the experience of standing in front of this natural wonder. Think about your tiny existence in this limitless cosmos and feel grateful 🙂

2. Go on the Hornblower Cruise

Do not miss the “voyage to the falls” on the Hornblower Cruise. The 20-minute boat ride gives you a thrilling experience taking you as close as it can get to the American Falls, Canadian Horseshoe Falls, and Great Gorge. We initially thought that the price of CAD 29 was a tad too much but felt it was worth every cent while we were on it.

PS: If you are traveling with a baby, you can park the stroller just before entering the cruise.

3. Watch the Fireworks

The sight of several colorful fireworks exploding in the sky over the falls is spectacular. The fireworks are on every summer night at 10 pm yet it’s better to check the schedule before you go.

4. Watch the Illumination

Even when there are no fireworks, Niagara Falls dons a colorful look in the evening. There are hundreds of LED lights all across the falls that light up the place beautifully every evening. The falls are lit in custom colors to mark significant days such as Earth Day, Canada Day, and even charitable causes like cancer awareness. See the full schedule here.

5. Go on the Niagara SkyWheel

Although I found it a little too slow, the view from the top of the SkyWheel was fantastic. Price: CAD 12.99 for adults and CAD 6.99 for kids 3-12 years of age.

6. Have Fun at Attractions at Clifton Hill

The SkyWheel is one of the attractions; there are plenty more with something for everyone. While there are fun rides and attractions for kids, there are a lot of fun activities for adults too. You need more than a day if you wish to cover more than a few. Of the ones we visited, I enjoyed Ripley’s Believe It Or Not museum the most.

There are several other must-do things at Niagara Falls (such as the Skylon Tower) which we hope to cover in our next visit to the falls.
