A Quick Eastern Canada Retreat: 2 Days in Ottawa, Gatineau, and Gananoque Road Trip

Are you ready for an unforgettable trip to Ottawa? In this comprehensive travel guide, we’re diving deep into the heart of Canada’s capital city, uncovering its hidden gems and must-see attractions. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or a foodie, Ottawa has something special in store for you. So, let’s embark on a journey to discover the treasures of Ottawa that will make your trip truly remarkable!

Day 1: Toronto to Ottawa Road Trip

Our expedition commenced in Toronto, and after a scenic 5-6 hour drive, we arrived in Ottawa. Before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s give a shoutout to the quaint town of Belleville, where we enjoyed a coffee break at the ever-reliable Tim Hortons. If you ever fancy a weekend getaway, consider Belleville; it’s worth it!

Our abode for the night was the Econo Lodge. It boasts an excellent location, and while it may not be the lap of luxury, it’s a budget-friendly choice. Remember, when you’re here, it’s all about maximizing that location!

Parliament Hill: The Heart of Ottawa

After checking in, we couldn’t resist a leisurely walk around Parliament Hill. The iconic Gothic Revival architecture and beautiful gardens are even more breathtaking up close. If it’s your first time in Ottawa, we recommend the Amphibus tour for a unique perspective of the city. But this time, we opted for the Aqua Taxi, a local commuter’s favorite, though it didn’t quite match the Amphibus’s charm.

BYward Market: Foodie Paradise

Our hunger led us to BYward Market, a lively district offering an array of dining options, artisanal goods, and a vibrant atmosphere. We decided on Ramakrishna restaurant, an Indian gem serving up decent food to satisfy our taste buds.

Byward Market is a vibrant and bustling market known for its lively atmosphere and vibrant energy. It is a place where locals and tourists can come together to explore a wide array of culinary delights, unique shops, and fascinating cultural experiences. The market offers a diverse range of fresh produce, handmade crafts, and delicious street food, making it a must-visit destination for foodies and shoppers alike. With its captivating charm and vibrant character, Byward Market continues to be a beloved hub of activity and a true cultural gem in the heart of the city. So, whether you’re strolling through the bustling stalls, enjoying the live music, or simply immersing yourself in the vibrant ambiance, Byward Market is sure to provide an unforgettable experience for all who visit.

Day 2: Gatineau and Gananoque

The next morning, we checked out and headed to Gatineau, a short drive from Ottawa. Our primary agenda was a cultural trail that promised art installations, street art, and intriguing sights. We ended up spending a good two hours exploring, but it’s entirely doable in one if you’re not as easily distracted as we are!

Pro Tip: The streets of Gatineau are so captivating; you might just find yourself stopping every few steps!

Gananoque: The 1000 Islands

Next stop: Gananoque! We had pre-booked a 1-hour 1000 Islands tour, which turned out to be a highlight of our trip. After the cruise, we checked into the Capricorn Motel Royale, a charming spot conveniently located opposite the cruise departure point. Keep in mind that there’s no on-site restaurant here, so you’ll need to venture out for a meal.

Starry Night at Gananoque

One unexpected treat in Gananoque was the incredible night sky. The lack of city lights allowed us to witness a starry spectacle like never before. Trust us; it’s an experience worth staying up for!

Parting Thoughts and Recommendations

Our Eastern Canada escapade was a perfect blend of culture, nature, and relaxation. While this itinerary offered a relaxed pace, we’d also recommend checking out one of Ottawa’s museums, with the Natural History Museum topping our list.

Don’t forget to spend some quality time on Parliament Hill Street, admiring the remarkable architecture and soaking in the historical vibes.
