We’re all set to head for a our next trip soon. Not sure of the destination we wanted to visit, we relied completely on the internet to help us a plan our holiday. We just had a budget in mind and few specifications, like a private villa with kitchen & a pool preferably, in mind. Thanks to a few veritably cool apps, we have zeroed in on the perfect destination and accommodation within our budget. While we shall write in details about the trip later, we thought of sharing our recommendations for 5 travel apps that you must download right away!
- Skyscanner: For Lowest Prices
We have been using this labour-saving app for a while now (and our love for it has only grown after Skyscanner ranked us one of the top 5 blogs to follow in 2017!).
The Skyscanner apps have been downloaded over 50 million times worldwide. And that’s not surprising because it is actually a super efficient app! The app has multiple exciting features:
- City breaks: It will help you find the cheapest options for a last-minute weekend city break
- Everywhere: If you, like us, have set travel dates but haven’t been able to decide the destination yet, this feature will help you find the top deals from the selected airport. We used this option to select Trivandrum as our choice of destination for our upcoming trip!
- Timeline view: Search for a specific destination in the Explore Top Deals section and this feature will find the best flight options for the near future
- Hotels and car search sync: Though we haven’t used this one as yet but found it very cool…After you add your destination and check in timings, the app automatically shows you multiple options for hotels and car hire. Super convenient!
Impressed by the efficiency of this app, we recommend this app for all travellers.
2. TripAdvisor: For Traveller Reviews
We haven’t used the app to make any flight or hotel bookings but we rely completely on it to get reviews about the hotels & restaurants and ask questions on the travel forum. I don’t remember selecting any hotel without going through the reviews on TripAdvisor. The app also comes in handy to check out the local attractions, shopping options and activities to do nearby.
The app claims to have over 350 million reviews by travellers all over the world.
We used this app for the first time while planning this trip after we selected the destination using Skyscanner. While we are yet to experience AirBnB stay, we are already a fan of the app and the concept in general.
If you are looking for a homestay or a boutique hotel kind of place, this app is your angel! Like I mentioned before, we had been looking for a private villa with kitchen for this holiday, where 8 of us are travelling together. We have earlier experienced a villa holiday in Goa and we thoroughly loved the idea of staying together without the restrictions and formalities of a hotel.
We’ve found a perfect villa with the help of AirBnb this time. The app allows us to add whatever specifications we are looking for and gives multiple options based on availability. You might notice slight changes in prices every time you look at a particular accommodation; the difference is usually of about Rs 9-10. We are not too sure why this happens but we read it on some sites that it’s a temporary glitch.
A highly popular concept among international travellers, it is a great way of saving expenses on your trip.
4. Google Maps: For directions
I can’t imagine moving around in my own city without this app so needless to say that I rely heavily on it while travelling. I do admit that there have been rare instances when the navigation has misled me or taken me through weirdest of routes but overall the app is extremely useful. The app gives you live traffic updates, street views and a voice-guided GPS navigation for car/cab, bus as well as walking.
5. Zomato: For Food Recommendations
Zomato is the largest restaurant directory and recommendation brand in India. We use it all the time to get home delivery of food from various restaurants near our place. The app, of course, comes in handy to read quick reviews about a restaurant. And you can book a table too. The app was of great help especially during our Goa and Nainital trips.
You can select a restaurant depending on the kind of cuisine or a particular dish you are looking for. You can see the menu, prices, recommendations and reviews and decide what you want to eat even before reaching the restaurant. Pretty cool!
