5 Places You Must Eat At While in Jaipur

Jaipur. What images does the name invoke in your mind? Coloured in pink, your thoughts probably conjure up images of the magnificent Hawa Mahal, the grand Amber Fort, or may be bandhini sarees. But if you are foodies like us, your mouth is probably watering up thinking of pyaaz kachori and dal baati churma! During our umpteen visits to Jaipur, we have tried and tasted food at several restaurants and cafes in Jaipur. While the list is fairly long, we have picked our absolute favourites over our last few visits. Sure, there are many other distinguished names that you’d find on top restaurants in Jaipur lists, here are the ones Abhinav and I personally recommend…

  1. Lakshmi Mishthan Bhandar aka LMB

Usually, the places that are too popular among tourists tend to disappoint. But this one doesn’t. Sample a Rajasthani Thali here to get a taste of the authentic local flavors. Priced at Rs 550, it is a sumptuous meal, which you aren’t allowed to share! While it might look too much for one person with unlimited servings on offer, you will be glad you don’t have to share such delicious food. It is located in Johari Bazaar, so you can eat here when you visit the market for shopping.

  1. Samrat Kachoriwala

  1. Tapri The Tea House

Gaining quick popularity among the locals and tourists, this is an unpretentious café serving good food and offering relaxed ambience. The outdoor area provides a stunning view of the city. Inside, there is a space with books stacked in a corner. Read, relax, catch up with friends, or simply enjoy the snacks and tea here.

4. Samode Haveli

Located inside the walled city of Jaipur, Samode Haveli is a traditional Indian palace. Converted into a luxury hotel by the royal family of Samode, it is well known for its impeccable hospitality. The food served here deserves a special mention. We went there a couple of years ago and still remember the flavours of the Rajasthani Thali we had here. There is a special item on the menu — raan-e-samode — which needs to be ordered a day in advance. Consider giving that a try! Other must haves: Laal Maans and Dal Makhani. It serves Rajasthani, Mughlai, North Indian as well as Continental cuisine. [At Rs 3500 for two people, it is luxury but worth a visit perhaps on a special occassion]

5. The GT Road

If you are a tourist in Jaipur, you probably would be looking for authentic Rajasthani flavours. The above mentioned options listed here will take care of that. Then once you’re done, visit The GT Road restaurant on our recommendation.

Grand Trunk road is the longest road in Asia starting from Bangladesh, passing through Bengal, northern India, regions now in Pakistan, and finally ending in Kabul. Bringing you the flavors from these regions, the restaurant has amazing flavours to offer. Much research has gone into setting up the interiors and even the cutlery. Carefully selected music mostly from Coke Studio is uniform across all the outlets in different cities (that in itself distinguishes it from cookie cutter restaurants mushrooming everywhere). The thinking isn’t restricted to the aesthetics; it is evident in flavors too. Now, we aren’t using the word authentic here. The flavors have been localized. But they stand out. The chapali kebab may not have mutton as per the original taste but it is juicy and succulent. There are distinct items on the menu such as Khatta Meetha Ananas (grilled pineapple with honey and cinnamon…Swipe to see picture). Get a taste of the delicacies at buffet starting from Rs 600. With flavourful starters, varied main course, and over 20 desserts, it is totally worth it!

Have you eaten at these restaurants in Jaipur? Which are your other favourites or which are your favourite Rajasthani dishes?
