“WHY HAVE WOMEN STARTED DRINKING SO MUCH!”…

Ok… so am I seeing this correctly? I can hardly believe my eyes when I see the news caption shouting “WHY HAVE WOMEN STARTED DRINKING SO MUCH!”…

I don’t know what sickens me most- the shallow approach that media usually takes towards deeper issues or the sexist headline. What’s worse, the presenter too was a woman. I wonder if she felt the urge to correct the headline herself.

Well let me tell you what it was all about. The recent Audi accident case has put our authorities on high alert and apparently there have been a lot of random checks at night to catch hold of DUI incidents. So they caught hold of this lady who’s name I don’t wish to disclose. The media, as usual, with their cameras and flash lights began doing what they do best. I guess the embarrassment and fatigue caught up with the woman and she lost her cool. What ensued was a cat and dog show, much to the media’s delight.

Don’t get me wrong here. I am not suggesting that the woman was victimized. Anyone drinking and driving, man or woman, should be handled correctly, period. They should be subject to the correct measures as per our legal guidelines.

But why raise an issue about an already oppressed gender? How can the media create such irresponsible waves just for the sake of publicity or just because the news is hot? It’s very disheartening to see how callously the matter has been handled. I would not be surprised if certain conservative sections of the society begin making life difficult for their daughters and daughters-in-law.

It’s a strange world that we live in. A world where everyone has different rules for themselves and others. Where heroes look like manipulative cowards. I do hope that the responsible section of the media wakes up and saves us from this ridiculous breaking-news trend that seems to prevail.
