Tourism Buzz: There’s More to Mauritius Than Just Beaches

Think Mauritius and the first image that pops up in your head is of pristine, turquoise blue beaches. Isn’t it? But there is more to Mauritius for a traveller to explore. Promoting the destination beyond its famous waters, Mauritius Tourism is  aiming to attract 1.2 lakh Indian tourists in 2020, up from 88,000 people expected to visit the island nation this year.

We met Arvind Bundhun, Director at Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, at Mauritius Roadshow in Delhi last week, who spoke to us about the expected growth. “Mauritius is already a popular destination among Indians for honeymoon and weddings. But we want the tourists to also explore other activities and adventures that Mauritius has to offer,” he told Blue Sky Dreamers.

While beaches and lagoons are popular, there is more to Mauritius…

Honestly speaking, our trip to Mauritius was also mostly about being at the beach and enjoying the activities at the luxury resort we stayed in. There are, however, several activities travellers would love to experience.

Keep aside the imagery of beaches, lagoons and reefs, and you can see a different side of Mauritius. For instance, the mountainous interior includes Black River Gorges National Park with rain forests, waterfalls, hiking trails and wildlife. Port Louis also has places to see with attractions like Champs de Mars horse track, Eureka plantation house and the beautiful Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens.

Adventure lovers can look for activities like sky diving and zip-lining. There are also a lot of options for golf lovers. If you are looking for slice of Mauritian culture, you can plan a visit during one of the many festivals celebrated on a large scale. That’s a fun way to know about the arts, music, food and traditions of a destination, right?
The post took me back to our wonderful holiday in the island. While we loved our time at the beach, we hope to see the other side of Mauritius too soon!
Have you been to Mauritius? What sites did you like best in the island?
