Sevilla Claridges Review
Sevilla at The Claridges, Delhi

Looking for the best place to propose in Delhi? A clandestine corner but one with candle lights, cabanas, cake et al? Sevilla (pronounced se veeya) at The Claridges, Delhi is where you need to be. Private space, sensual ambience, excellent food – the reasons are plenty why it is considered one of the most romantic restaurants in the city.

We went for a review to Sevilla, The Claridges — a beautifully romantic restaurant in Delhi — recently. The restaurant has been revamped recently and romance seems to be the theme on the painters mind. One wonders how madly in love the architect would have been to come up with such a beautiful ambience. If I had to describe Sevilla in two words I’d say simply romantic.

Inside Sevilla

If you, like us, happen to go to The Claridges on a Friday evening it would make perfect sense to begin your romantic date at Aura – vodka bar at the hotel. Bonus was that it was the inaugural evening for Ladies Night (free drinks for ladies every Friday). The bar serves Russian snacks, apparently a first in the city. We’d recommend Pineapple Martini with Pierogi Ruskie (Rs 745) – stuffed with cheese and potatoes, cooked in butter with chilly and parsley, topped with fried onions. A relaxed room with comfortable sofas makes it a great space for cozy, romantic conversations.

Aura – Vodka Bar at The Claridges

Aura made for a perfect starter for our entrée of a reservation at Sevilla, the Mediterranean restaurant.

Before you step in, be warned it is quite easy to lose sense of time here. Well, you’re on a date, who cares anyway. The “champagne gold” theme, as they call it, works well to set the mood. While there are indoor seating options, we chose to sit outside to enjoy the soothing March breeze.

Vodka and whisky be damned, the wine sommelier (Judith) insisted we began our evening here with Sangria. A beverage from Spain, it consists of wine, chopped fruit, and some brandy.

I know I am repeating but the place just begs you to be romantic. It must be one of the best romantic restaurants in Delhi. It must be an everyday sight for waiters here to see couples engrossed in silent conversations or bending down on knees to propose. In fact, they have a special Proposal Package too! Champagne, cake, roses – all for Rs 10, 000. The waiter’s expertise in capturing the surprise moment for you comes for free.

Accompanying the meal was a South African wine, as recommended by the sommelier. The wine complemented the food extremely well.

Speaking of food, not only was it a gastronomic wonderland, the names themselves sounded like some Spanish canción. Patatasbravas, Montados, Gambas del chorizo, Croquetas de pollo – all played a melodious culinary symphony on my taste buds. The service made sure I took my time enjoying each meal, which by the way lasted close to four heavenly hours. (That’s the longest we have spent on a restaurant review!) The presentation made me wonder whether they had a kitchen or an art gallery. The Cordero  (Grilled New Zealand lamb chops with honey aioli), Higado de pato (granny smith apple, duck liver and smoked eel terrine), Corn fed chicken (spring chicken grilled on the bone served with truffle mash, charred asparagus, Swiss chard, Romanesque and red wine jus), Degustation of Lamb (saddle, rack and loin of New Zealand lamb, caramelized new season vegetables, shallot and garlic gel, saffron braised russet   potatoes, Provencal crumbs and enhanced pan juices), Atlantic sea Black Cod (Caramelized onion puree, creamed Savoy cabbage and smoked bacon, gratinated potato and white pepper cream) all made for a meal fit for kings.

The juices and flavours that Sevilla’s food has to offer seems unparalleled, such is the meticulous preparation in the kitchen. Sevilla also boasts of being the only restaurant in Delhi to have a Josper oven, a special Spanish oven which combines a grill and an oven to bring you fabulously flavoursome food cooked with perfection and precise amount of heat.

The evening ended with Classic Churros (with sharp citrus jus and coconut gelato) and Bitter chocolate mousseline (watermelon jelly, blueberry crisp and Grand Marnier Anglaise). The flavoursome I’d palette and subtle textures seemed to be making love to my taste buds.

Sevilla offers great food no doubt. But it also offers something else. It offers an escape from the usual and into something special. We highly recommend you enjoy this experience called Sevilla with your loved one. It’s one of the best places in the city to pop up the question!
