One of my most memorable childhood food memories is of relishing burgers at Nirula’s near my house. Those were real burgers — with juicy mutton tikki topped with mayonnaise and pickles. Sadly, other chains took over and the taste faded away especially with the neighbourhood Nirula’s shutting down. Burgers haven’t been the same since then.
Flying Saucer Cafe, located inside Epicuria Mall Nehru Place, is one restaurant in Delhi that surprised me with that familiar taste of burgers. The Mini Burger Platter (Rs 395) brought back the taste and memories. Lamb burger was simply delicious.
My friend and I went on a Saturday afternoon when the place was abuzz with college kids as well as ladies enjoying their kitty party. Evening wears a different look, we are told. There’s live music on certain days and music revs the place up, informs the manager. The ambiance is lively but the theme of the restaurant seemed confusing to us. We didn’t quite understand why the restaurant is called The Flying Saucer Cafe. The staff member who gave us the explanation seemed unconvinced himself! It apparently takes the name from a Greek tradition of breaking crockery as a part of celebration. You can experience the ‘joy’ at this restaurant in Delhi by enjoying a shot and then breaking the glass (worth Rs 500 plus).
The humour in the menu design and ‘How I Met Your Mother’ coasters and quotes perhaps got lost in the afternoon chirpy ambiance. We are willing to give it a benefit of doubt thinking that perhaps it goes well with party evenings.
The next dish we ordered did not live up to the expectations set by the starter. The non-veg Mezze Platter is average and overpriced (Rs 795). There are other restaurants in Delhi doing a better job. Mushroom Pasta (Rs 425) is decent. The dish in the end came as a surprise just when we were thinking of writing off the place for its main course. Grilled Basa (Rs 525) served with lemon butter sauce simply stood out for its taste. I can go back to the restaurant perhaps just for this dish and the lamb burger…may be on a Saturday evening this time!
